Three Kinds of "Garage Cabinets"
Every garage cabinet on the market falls into one of three categories. Only one of them is actually built for a garage.
Open Metal Shelving
Durable and cheap — the Home Depot or Costco entry point. But everything you own sits out in the open. It's called "visual clutter" for a reason: you can see it, which means everyone else can too.
Melamine ("Wrapped") Cabinets
What roughly 90% of the market uses, including big national brands. It's plastic glued onto low-grade particle board with exposed seams and edge banding. Fine inside a kitchen. In a garage, ambient moisture breaks the glue down and the cabinet starts to sag and swell — it just wasn't built for this room.
Strux Powder-Coated Wood
Dense MDF, heated to draw moisture out, electrostatically charged, and baked in an infrared oven — fully encapsulated with zero exposed seams. This is the only one of the three actually engineered for a garage.
The Engineering Behind It
This is the part most companies skip, because it's the part that actually explains why the price is what it is.
Dado Joinery pronounced "DAY-doh"
A dado joint is a groove cut into one panel that a second panel slides into — similar to how LEGO bricks lock together. It matters because the weight of the cabinet gets distributed across the entire joint, instead of resting on a single cam lock or pin the way modular or IKEA-style furniture is built. If one pin fails on a cam-lock cabinet, the whole thing is compromised. A dado-jointed cabinet doesn't have that single point of failure — it stays square and doesn't sag, year after year.
Fully Powder Coated
Every component — fronts, sides, tops, bottoms, backs, and shelves — gets the same powder coat finish, not just the parts you can see. No glued-on melamine, no exposed edge banding, no seams for moisture to work into. That's why these cabinets don't swell, delaminate, or fail at the seams the way most garage cabinets eventually do.
Steel Rail Mounting
Cabinets mount to a steel rail fastened into every stud, 16 inches on center, with cabinets secured to the rail at every pre-drilled point. This is what actually carries the load — not drywall anchors, not glue.
Leveling Legs
Custom-fit leveling legs keep the cabinet run square even when your garage floor isn't perfectly flat — which, if you've ever set foot in a garage, it never is.
Sized for What You Actually Store
Kitchen cabinets are sized for plates and cereal boxes. These are sized for tools, totes, and a full-size gun safe.

Real Custom Design
Garage walls are almost never perfectly square. Here's how a proper install accounts for that instead of pretending it isn't true.
- Every wall-to-wall run is measured in three places — bottom, mid-height, and top — and the design is based on the narrowest of the three, because a garage wall that's fine at the floor can be an inch narrower at the ceiling.
- Runs are typically sized about two inches shy of the full wall, with a clean gap left on each side — giving installers room to fit the run perfectly without guessing, and guaranteeing it actually fits in your space.
- Blind corners and 45°/90° corner cabinets are designed around, not ignored — corner units use fixed width and depth (only height adjusts), and a blind corner becomes an opportunity to hide the seam where your eye won't catch it.
- Because cabinets are custom-sized instead of pulled from a handful of stock widths, a bank of cabinets built around your bins and totes doesn't waste 16 inches of dead space the way an off-the-shelf 48" cabinet would for a 32"-wide set of bins.

Aren't garage cabinets basically the same as kitchen cabinets?
No, at least not the ones we install. Most garage cabinets on the market really are kitchen cabinets adapted for the garage — same shallow depth, same weight limits, same materials that swell and delaminate in temperature swings a kitchen never sees. Strux Garage Cabinets are sized for garage life instead: up to 32" deep (36" for cabinets built to house a safe), rated up to 500 lbs per cabinet, and fully powder coated for scratch and fade resistance in an unheated garage.
How is this different from what big national cabinet brands sell?
Most national garage cabinet brands — roughly 90% of the market — use melamine construction: plastic laminate glued onto particle board, with exposed seams and edge banding. It's fine inside a kitchen, but ambient garage humidity breaks the glue down over time and the cabinet starts to sag and swell. Strux Garage Cabinets use fully powder-coated dense MDF with dado joinery instead, built specifically to hold up in a garage.

How much weight can a Strux cabinet actually hold?
Base and tall cabinets are rated to 500 lbs each (300 lbs for wall-mounted Elite Floating units with no legs). Upper wall cabinets hold 75 lbs, drawers hold 75 lbs each, and shelves hold 100 lbs each — assuming proper installation and evenly distributed weight.
How deep can these cabinets go?
Standard base, tall, and upper cabinets run up to 32" deep. We also build dedicated cabinets up to 36" deep specifically to house a gun safe.
What happens if something fails under warranty?
Contact us or [email protected] with proof of purchase, install date, and dealer name, plus photos or video, within 90 days of noticing the issue. Defective components are repaired or replaced at no material cost. Labor, removal, and reinstallation aren't covered under the warranty itself, but as your installer we'll walk you through next steps. Full terms are available in the warranty PDF.
What colors and finishes are available?
Popular cabinet colors include Platinum and Pewter, with additional colors available. Slatwall comes in finishes like Barnwood and Whitewood, and hardware is available in brushed nickel, matte black, and matte gold. You'll see and choose real samples before your design is finalized.
